There is a huge question in the minds of Catholics to who will be the next Pope after Pope Francis?. Africa’s Own Cardinal Peter Turkson might just become the next Pope. Notwithstanding as a culture in Vatican, the “College of Cardinals” will be initiating the preparations for a papal conclave, which they are expected to convene in the month of May 2025 to elect pope Francis successor.
While the outcome remains uncertain several cardinals are considered prominent candidates. After the passing of Pope Francis, all eyes are now on Cardinal Turkson, one of the most respected and admired figures in the Catholic Church today.
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson was birthed on the 11th of October in the 1948, in present-day country Ghana, his 76 years old. Turkson spent his life advocating for social justice, climate action, and the dignity of the poor. He formerly led the Vatican’s office for promoting human development and has long been a voice of compassion and wisdom. It’s been centuries since a Black African sat on the Papal throne,but history might be about to change.

a. Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy)
Serving as the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin is regarded as a leading candidate. He was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis in 2014 and is known for his diplomatic acumen. Some critics have expressed concerns about his approach to church teachings .
b. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines)
Often referred to as the “Asian Pope Francis,” Cardinal Tagle is noted for his progressive views on social issues. He has been critical of the Church’s traditional stance on LGBTQ+ individuals and divorced Catholics. If elected, he would be the first pope from Asia .
c. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (Italy)
As the President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Zuppi is recognized for his moderate and inclusive approach. He was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis in 2019 and is considered a potential reformist successor .
d. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
Cardinal Ambongo Besungu is the President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar. He is known for his opposition to certain policies of Pope Francis, such as the blessing of unmarried and same-sex couples .
e. Cardinal Péter Erdő (Hungary)
A conservative figure within the Church, Cardinal Erdő has previously served as the President of the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe. He was appointed cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and is considered a traditionalist candidate .
